Thadu Adventures is a unique ecotourism experience unlike anything offered in the world. Experiences are centered around the Grand Canyon of Canada along the Stikine River. This mighty river and sacred area is known as “Tūdes̱e chō” to the Tahltan and has served as their people’s lifeblood for thousands of years. It is said that the Tahltan Nation began when two sisters arrived at the beach alongside the confluence of the Stikine River and Tahltan River, in front of the rock formation known as Thadu.

Thadu Adventures’ home base is alongside the Stikine River at the Days Ranch. Participants will be accompanied by and learn from Tahltan guides, cultural experts and local elders during their stay. You will have the opportunity to hike along ancestral trails of the Tahltan people where you will view iconic wildlife in the region throughout your stay.

The Stikine Canyon is world renowned for having the largest Mountain Goats on the planet, as well as being home to other majestic big game animals including Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Moose, Elk and Deer. Other big game animals in other parts of Tahltan Territory, which can be accessed on a day trip, include Caribou and Stones Sheep.

The area is also home to many smaller game creatures, including the Wolf, Fox, Coyote, Lynx, Beaver, Marten, River Otter, Wolverine, Fisher, Rabbit, Porcupine, Cougar and many smaller species.

Birds are also abundant in Tahltan Territory. You’ll likely see Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Ravens and several species of Hawks, Swallows, Grouse, Ducks, Owls and many more.

Participants will learn how the Tahltan people utilized all the aforementioned creatures, as well as many varieties of fish, berries, plants, minerals and other natural resources. Cuisine on your trip will include meats, plants and berries which have been harvested by Tahltan people for thousands of years.

For those interested, we can make arrangements with local Tahltans who harvest big game animals (ie. Moose, Mountain Goats, Elk, Bears etc.) and fish (ie. Salmon, Trout etc.) to allow us to assist them in the skinning/gutting and preparation processes. All such harvests would be utilized in a Tahltan way for food, social and ceremonial purposes by Tahltan families and communities. Sharing in such cultural traditions, which have been passed down and evolved from generation-to-generation of Tahltan people, will be an unforgettable experience for visitors.

The group can also arrange to have Thadu Adventures pick them up in Terrace, Smithers or Whitehorse and transport them by vehicle in the morning for an additional cost. The drive will take approximately eight hours depending on the number of stops and lunch plans, with the goal of arriving to camp no later than 6pm.
